Colorblind settings on Windows: what actually helps
There are four different places you can change color on a Windows machine, and they fix four different amounts of the problem. Most advice online names one of them and stops. Here's the whole picture, including where the free built-in option is genuinely the right answer.
Start by knowing which axis you're on
This matters more than any setting, because picking the wrong filter type makes things worse rather than better. Color vision deficiency runs along two separate axes:
- Red-green (protan and deutan types). Reds and greens converge; blues and yellows are fine. This is by far the most common, affecting roughly 1 in 12 men.
- Blue-yellow (tritan types). Blues drift toward green and yellows wash toward pink; reds and greens stay readable. Much rarer.

The four options, graded
1. Windows built-in color filters Start here, it's free
Windows ships with system-wide color filters and most people who need them don't know they exist. They apply to everything on screen, they cost nothing, and they're already installed.
Find them at Settings → Accessibility → Color filters on Windows 11, or Settings → Ease of Access → Color filters on Windows 10. You'll get presets for red-green (two variants, for protan and deutan types) and blue-yellow, plus grayscale and inverted options that aren't relevant here. There's a keyboard shortcut too: Windows + Ctrl + C toggles the filter on and off, which is the fastest way to compare and the fastest way to switch it off when you need true colors.
Honest assessment: for a lot of people this is enough, and anyone writing about colorblind settings who skips past it to sell something is doing you a disservice. Try it for a week before spending money on anything. Its limits are that you get preset strengths rather than fine control, and the presets are built around the strongest form of each type, so a milder deficiency can find them heavy-handed.
2. Per-app colorblind modes Good where they exist
Plenty of games ship colorblind modes, and they're often better than a system filter because the developer can recolor specific game elements rather than transforming the whole image. The same is true of some charting and data tools, which offer colorblind-safe palettes that change the source colors instead of filtering them.
Where this falls down is coverage. You'll configure it in the three apps that offer it and get nothing in the dozens that don't, and it does nothing for websites, spreadsheets, PDFs, or video. Use these when available; don't expect them to be a strategy.
3. Browser extensions Browser only
Daltonization extensions exist for Chrome and Firefox and can work well on web pages. Two caveats: they only cover the browser, so the rest of your desktop is untouched, and because they manipulate page rendering they occasionally break layouts or fight with a site's own styling. Worth having if the browser is where you spend your day, but it's a partial fix by design.
4. Screen-wide correction software Covers everything, tunable
This is the category the built-in filters belong to, done with more control. Software like DOA applies correction at the display level for Protanopia, Deuteranopia, and Tritanopia, so it reaches every app, browser tab, document, and video at once, and it lets you tune the intensity rather than accepting a single preset.
The honest comparison with the Windows built-in option: same fundamental idea, more adjustment, and it sits alongside the rest of what the app does. If the Windows presets already work for you, use them and keep your money. If they overshoot, undershoot, or you want the correction dialled to your own vision rather than a textbook average, that's the gap this fills. Turning up saturation or contrast Doesn't address it
A recurring suggestion that doesn't work. Saturation makes every color more intense, including the two you can't tell apart, so they stay just as confusable while everything gets louder. Color vision deficiency is about which hues collapse together, not how vivid they are.
Filters help the person looking at the screen. The durable fix is not depending on color alone in the first place: pair a red/green status with an icon or a word, label chart lines directly instead of relying on a color legend, and use shape or pattern as well as hue.
It costs almost nothing at design time and it means nobody needs a filter to read your work. It also happens to be what the accessibility guidelines ask for.
What to actually do, in order
- Work out your axis first (red-green or blue-yellow). Everything else depends on it.
- Turn on the Windows filter and live with it for a few days. Free, instant, system-wide. Use Windows + Ctrl + C to compare on and off rather than judging it cold.
- Switch on per-app colorblind modes in the games and tools that offer them; they can beat a global filter in their own window.
- If the presets don't fit, try screen-wide correction you can tune, and compare it against the built-in filter directly.
- Keep a way to switch it off. Any correction shifts colors that weren't a problem, so turn it off for photo editing, design work, or anything where the true color matters.
Two things no setting will do
None of this changes your color vision; it changes what the screen sends, and only while you're looking at that screen. Printed material, traffic lights, and the world in general are unaffected.
And no filter, web page, or app is a diagnosis. Screen-based color tests are unreliable because every monitor renders color differently.
